Gymnastics Leotards vs. Dance Leotards: What's the Difference?
Posted by on
We're often asked what exactly is the difference between a gymnastics leotard and a dance leotard.
The truth is, not much difference at all. At least as far as practice or workout leotards are concerned.
Competition leotards, however, are an entirely different matter.
Dance leotards come in a wider range of styles than gymnastics leotards. Halter top, long sleeve, camisole straps, tank style to name a few.
Dance leotards can also have cutouts in the back, lace overlay or low necklines.
Gymnastics leotards, on the other hand, come primarily in two styles: tank or long sleeve.
Tank top straps on gymnastics leotards are 2-3 inches wide and have a neckline near the collarbone.
The rigor of tumbling, bars, and beam routines require a leotard made with wider straps that won't slide off the shoulder during a routine.
Long sleeved leotards can also protect the gymnast's skin during a fall.
Both gymnastics and dance leotards come in more glittery styles for performances and competition.
